These two youngsters appear to be identical twins, or perhaps, on closer inspection, fraternal twins? The child on the left seems to be a girl, the one on the right with shorter hair, possibly a boy. The imaginative nature of the photographer's setup works not only as a twist on the standard studio portrait, but also as a metaphor for the imaginary world of the prepubescent child in which role playing diverges greatly from the standards of adult society, including the standards of gender conformity.
